Nanaimo – The Harbour City

Coastal Charm and Island Adventure Await in Nanaimo

Located on the east coast of Vancouver Island, Nanaimo is a vibrant waterfront city known for its scenic beauty, history, and outdoor activities. Often called “The Harbour City,” Nanaimo combines the relaxed pace of island life with plenty of things to see and do.

One of the city’s highlights is the Harbourfront Walkway, where visitors can stroll along the waterfront, watch seaplanes, and enjoy local cafés with ocean views. A short ferry ride takes you to Newcastle Island Marine Provincial Park (Saysutshun), an island park ideal for hiking, cycling, and picnicking by the sea.

For nature lovers, Neck Point Park and Pipers Lagoon Park offer beautiful coastal trails, rocky viewpoints, and excellent photo opportunities. History enthusiasts can visit The Bastion, one of the oldest Hudson’s Bay Company buildings in western Canada, standing proudly near the downtown harbour.

Nearby, Petroglyph Provincial Park features ancient Indigenous rock carvings, offering a glimpse into the region’s cultural heritage. And of course, no visit is complete without tasting the city’s signature dessert along the Nanaimo Bar Trail, which celebrates this sweet Canadian creation.

With its welcoming atmosphere, picturesque seascapes, and easy access to other Vancouver Island destinations, Nanaimo is a perfect blend of relaxation, adventure, and coastal charm.
