668 Centre Street, Nanaimo, BC V9R 4Z4, Canada
A peaceful island retreat just minutes from downtown Nanaimo.
Saysutshun, also known as Newcastle Island Marine Provincial Park, is one of the most beautiful and easily accessible natural getaways in Nanaimo, British Columbia. Just a short 10-minute ferry ride from the Nanaimo Harbour, this island offers a refreshing escape filled with coastal beauty, forest trails, and a touch of local history. The island is managed in partnership with the Snuneymuxw First Nation, whose cultural heritage is deeply tied to this land.
The island’s scenic shoreline features sandy beaches, tidal pools, and rocky cliffs, making it ideal for walking, swimming, picnicking, or simply relaxing by the water. More than 20 kilometres of well-marked trails wind through the forest, offering views of the surrounding Strait of Georgia and nearby islands. Popular routes include loops to Brownie Bay, Kanaka Bay, and Shaft Point — each offering peaceful spots to pause and enjoy nature.
Saysutshun has a rich past — once home to a sandstone quarry, a fish saltery, and a luxury resort in the early 1900s. Today, visitors can still see remnants of those times while exploring the park’s interpretive trails. The island is car-free, enhancing the sense of calm and connection with nature. Best time to visit: Late spring to early autumn when ferry services and park amenities are fully operational.
