Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG)
Burlington, ON L7T 4H4, Canada
Canada’s Largest Living Museum of Plants and Nature.
The Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG) in Burlington is one of Canada’s most cherished natural attractions and the largest botanical garden in the country. Spanning over 2,400 acres, it offers a perfect blend of cultivated beauty and protected natural landscapes. Located at the western tip of Lake Ontario, RBG connects Burlington and Hamilton through a network of gardens, walking trails, and conservation areas that attract visitors year-round.
Founded in 1941, the Royal Botanical Gardens serve as both a horticultural showplace and an ecological sanctuary. The gardens are home to more than 300 acres of beautifully designed landscapes, featuring themed sections such as the Hendrie Park, Rock Garden, Laking Garden, and Arboretum. Each garden highlights different aspects of plant life — from vibrant annuals and perennials to rare species and native flora. Seasonal flower displays, including spring tulips, summer roses, and autumn foliage, make every visit unique.
Beyond the cultivated gardens, the RBG preserves over 2,000 acres of natural areas with more than 25 kilometres of walking trails. These trails wind through woodlands, wetlands, and escarpment landscapes that support hundreds of bird species and other wildlife. The Cootes Paradise Marsh, a key conservation area within RBG, is a vital habitat for migratory birds and aquatic species.
The Royal Botanical Gardens also serve as a major centre for education, research, and conservation. It hosts workshops, children’s programs, art exhibitions, and seasonal events such as plant sales and guided nature walks. Visitors can enjoy a meal or coffee at the on-site café, browse the gift shop, or attend one of the many garden festivals held throughout the year.
RBG is not only a paradise for plant lovers but also a tranquil escape for families, photographers, and nature enthusiasts. Its combination of scenic beauty, biodiversity, and cultural activities makes it one of Ontario’s top outdoor destinations.
