Joseph Brant Museum

1240 North Shore Blvd E, Burlington, ON L7S 2L7, Canada

Honouring History, Heritage, and the Spirit of Burlington.

The Joseph Brant Museum is one of Burlington’s most important cultural and historical landmarks. Located near Spencer Smith Park and the city’s picturesque waterfront, the museum celebrates the rich heritage of the region and the legacy of Joseph Brant (Thayendanegea) — the Mohawk leader, loyalist, and statesman after whom the city is named.

Originally built in 1937 as a replica of Joseph Brant’s 19th-century homestead, the museum underwent a major renovation and expansion in 2019, transforming it into a modern cultural centre. The new facility combines the charm of its historical roots with contemporary architectural design, offering 17,000 square feet of gallery and exhibition space.

Inside, visitors can explore permanent and rotating exhibits that showcase Burlington’s history, Indigenous culture, and community development. The museum also hosts travelling exhibitions from across Canada, featuring art, science, and cultural displays that appeal to both adults and children. Interactive exhibits and multimedia presentations make history engaging and accessible for all ages.

Beyond its exhibitions, the Joseph Brant Museum plays an active role in education and community outreach. It offers guided tours, workshops, and public programs designed to promote understanding of local heritage and Indigenous contributions to Canadian history. The museum’s location overlooking Lake Ontario further enhances its appeal, providing a beautiful and meaningful setting for reflection and discovery.
