Ancient Forest (Chun T’oh Whudujut) Provincial Park

Yellowhead Hwy, BC-16, F, BC V0J 1H0, Canada

Located about 120 kilometres east of Prince George along Highway 16, the Ancient Forest / Chun T’oh Whudujut Provincial Park is one of British Columbia’s most remarkable natural treasures. It protects a rare inland temperate rainforest, a unique ecosystem found nowhere else in the world.

Visitors can walk among towering western red cedars — some estimated to be over 1,000 years old — along a beautifully built boardwalk trail that makes the park accessible to people of all ages and abilities. The trail winds through lush ferns, moss-covered roots, and the gentle sound of streams, offering an unforgettable sense of peace and wonder.

A highlight of the park is the short side trail leading to a scenic waterfall, adding to the forest’s tranquil charm. Interpretive signs along the route share information about the area’s ecology and cultural importance to the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation, whose language gives the park its traditional name, Chun T’oh Whudujut — meaning “the Ancient Forest.”

Now a protected Provincial Park, it stands as a symbol of conservation and respect for both nature and Indigenous heritage. For travelers seeking a quiet, awe-inspiring connection with the natural world, the Ancient Forest is truly a must-see destination near Prince George.
