Notre-Dame-du-Cap Shrine (Our Lady of the Cape Sanctuary)
626 Rue Notre Dame E, Trois-Rivières, QC G8T 4G9, Canada
A Sacred Sanctuary of Peace, Faith, and Beauty on the St. Lawrence.
The Notre-Dame-du-Cap Shrine, also known as Sanctuaire Notre-Dame-du-Cap, is one of Canada’s most important Marian pilgrimage sites and a major spiritual attraction in Trois-Rivières. Set along the peaceful shores of the St. Lawrence River, the shrine draws thousands of visitors each year who come to pray, reflect, and admire its historic buildings and serene natural surroundings. Its sacred atmosphere, remarkable architecture, and rich history make it a highlight for both religious pilgrims and cultural travellers.
At the heart of the site stands the Basilica of Notre-Dame-du-Cap, an impressive modern structure known for its soaring dome, stained-glass windows, and beautifully crafted interior. The basilica can accommodate large gatherings and hosts numerous religious celebrations, musical performances, and community events throughout the year.
Beside the basilica is the Small Historic Chapel, built in 1720 and one of the oldest churches in Canada to remain largely in its original form. This charming chapel is closely tied to the famous Miracle of the Ice Bridge—a significant event in 1879 that helped establish the shrine as a place of devotion. Walking through the chapel provides a moving connection to centuries of faith and tradition.
The shrine’s grounds are a major part of its appeal. Visitors can stroll through beautifully landscaped gardens, tree-lined pathways, and peaceful outdoor spaces designed for contemplation and rest. Sculptures, rosary paths, fountains, and quiet seating areas enhance the sanctuary’s calming environment. During summer, the site becomes especially vibrant with outdoor masses, ceremonies, and spiritual activities.
