Riverview Park & Zoo is a popular family attraction in Peterborough, Ontario. It is the only free admission accredited zoo in Canada, making it a favorite destination for both locals and visitors. The zoo offers a wonderful mix of animal exhibits, playgrounds, and green spaces where people of all ages can enjoy a day outdoors.
The zoo is home to more than 150 animals from around the world. Visitors can see species such as camels, wallabies, monkeys, otters, and exotic birds. Each exhibit is designed to provide a safe and natural environment for the animals while also giving guests a chance to learn about wildlife conservation. Educational programs and interactive displays help families and school groups better understand the importance of protecting nature and animals.
In addition to the animals, Riverview Park & Zoo has many attractions that make it special. There is a large playground for children, beautiful walking trails along the Otonabee River, and a splash pad that is very popular in the summer months. The miniature train ride is another highlight that delights younger visitors and provides a fun way to explore part of the park.
Since admission is free, the zoo operates with the help of community donations and strong local support. Families often bring picnics and spend the entire day enjoying the mix of nature, animals, and recreational activities.
The park and zoo grounds are open year-round from 8:30 a.m. until dusk daily. The office operates Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. In summer, the gift shop/guest services is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and the miniature train runs from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (weather permitting). The splash pad runs daily 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. in summer. In off seasons, many amenities (like the train, splash pad, and seasonal exhibits) may be closed or have reduced hours.
Admission is free, and so is parking. Riverview is proud to be Canada’s only zoo with free entry and full CAZA accreditation. During summer, the train ride carries a small fee (about $2 per person) with free rides for children under 2.
