Dungeon Provincial Park – A Unique UNESCO Geosite in Bonavista.

Dungeon Provincial Park is a small but fascinating natural site located near the town of Bonavista in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It is famous for its dramatic sea caves and rock formations created by the powerful forces of the Atlantic Ocean over thousands of years. This unique geological feature has earned it a place as a UNESCO Global Geopark site, part of the Discovery Global Geopark.

The main attraction of the park is "The Dungeon" – a large collapsed sea cave with two natural rock arches that open to the sea. The arches were formed by waves eroding the soft sedimentary rock over time. Visitors can view the Dungeon from above or take in the spectacular views of the coastline, cliffs, and seabirds flying over the area. This site offers a quiet and peaceful environment with a rugged beauty that makes it a great stop for photography, picnics, and nature appreciation. There are no major facilities or trails, but the area is easily accessible by car and only a short drive from the historic town of Bonavista.

The surrounding area is also home to puffins, whales (during the right season), and many seabirds, making it a great spot for wildlife viewing. Interpretive panels help explain the geological history of the Dungeon and how the natural arches were formed. A visit to Dungeon Provincial Park offers a glimpse into Newfoundland’s raw coastal beauty and geological wonders.
