A Proud Landmark Celebrating the Spirit of New Iceland

Standing tall on the shores of Lake Winnipeg, the Viking Statue in Gimli is one of Manitoba’s most iconic landmarks. This impressive monument reflects the proud Icelandic roots of the local community and symbolizes courage, exploration, and endurance — values deeply connected to both Viking history and the settlers who founded “New Iceland” in the 19th century.

Erected in 1967 during Canada’s Centennial celebrations, the Viking Statue has since become a beloved symbol of Gimli and a must-see attraction for visitors exploring Manitoba’s Interlake region.

The Viking Statue was created to honour the Icelandic immigrants who arrived in Manitoba between 1875 and 1880, establishing a settlement they called New Iceland. These settlers brought with them a rich cultural heritage that still thrives in Gimli today.

The statue — depicting a Viking warrior holding a shield and sword — represents the settlers’ strength, determination, and sense of adventure as they built a new life along the shores of Lake Winnipeg.

The statue is located near Gimli Harbour and Beach, making it an ideal stop while exploring the town’s vibrant waterfront. Surrounded by manicured gardens and interpretive plaques, the site provides panoramic lake views — especially at sunrise and sunset. Visitors often take photos here before strolling the harbourfront boardwalk or visiting nearby cafes and boutiques.

Best Time to Visit: Year-round; summer offers the most vibrant atmosphere with nearby festivals and lake activities.
