Remai Modern

102 Spadina Crescent E, Saskatoon, SK S7K 0L3, Canada

Remai Modern is a striking contemporary art museum in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Opened in October 2017, it stands on the west bank of the South Saskatchewan River in the lively River Landing district. Designed by Bruce Kuwabara of KPMB Architects, the building stretches over four levels and covers around 11,700 m² (130,000 ft²). Its standout feature is the cantilevered copper coloured façade, inspired by prairie barns and the nearby Delta Bessborough Hotel, with a fully glazed ground floor that connects the inside to the riverbank.

Inside, Remai Modern marries art and community. The ground floor houses a welcoming atrium with a fireplace, a learning studio, an art and design shop, and Hearth restaurant with river views—all free to enter. Upper floors feature 11 galleries, including the renowned Picasso Gallery, and host diverse exhibitions ranging from local to international modern and contemporary art. A 150 seat theatre, multi use spaces, and outdoor terraces invite events, performances, and community gatherings.

The museum’s permanent collection includes more than 8,000 artworks from around 1900 to today. It continues the legacy of the Mendel Art Gallery, inheriting many historical works. The crown jewel is the world’s most comprehensive set of Picasso linocuts—over 400 prints and ceramics—donated by Ellen Remai and Frederick Mulder.

Remai Modern is rooted in community and culture. It highlights Indigenous voices through programming, welcomes visitors in both English and Cree, and hosts outreach initiatives like school art programs and partnerships with local organizations. The museum’s mission focuses on connecting, inspiring, and challenging diverse audiences through equitable art experiences.
