The Royal City on the Banks of the Fraser River
New Westminster, often called “The Royal City,” is one of the oldest and most charming cities in British Columbia, Canada. Founded in 1859, it was the first capital of the province and remains rich in history, culture, and riverside beauty. Located along the Fraser River, about 30 minutes from downtown Vancouver, the city blends its historic roots with a modern, vibrant atmosphere.
One of the main highlights of New Westminster is its beautiful Fraser River Waterfront Esplanade (Waterfront Esplanade Park). This scenic walkway offers peaceful river views, gardens, and easy access to the River Market at Westminster Quay, a lively spot with local shops, cafés, and weekend events. Nearby, the Westminster Pier Park provides green space for picnics and outdoor fun.
The city’s cultural heart is the Anvil Centre, a modern glass building that houses the New Westminster Museum, art galleries, and the Anvil Theatre, where concerts and performances are held throughout the year. History lovers can visit Irving House, one of British Columbia’s oldest heritage homes, and explore the city’s past through exhibits and walking tours.
New Westminster is also known for its festivals, art shows, and strong community spirit. With its combination of heritage charm, riverfront living, and cultural attractions, it offers something for everyone — whether you want a quiet walk by the river, a family outing, or a taste of local history.
Easily reached by SkyTrain, New Westminster is an excellent day-trip destination from Vancouver and a welcoming stop on any British Columbia travel route.
